Every motorcycle engine produces power at relatively high engine speeds, but the rear wheel turns much more slowly. The job of the final drive is to transfer that power from the gearbox to the rear wheel efficiently, reliably and safely. Most motorcycles use one of three systems: chain, belt or shaft drive. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and none is universally better than the others. Manufacturers choose the system that best suits the motorcycle’s intended purpose.
Chain Drive
Advantages – Chains are lightweight, efficient and relatively inexpensive to manufacture. They can transmit very high power without excessive weight and make it easy to alter the final drive ratio simply by changing one or both sprockets. This is particularly attractive to racers and off-road riders who may wish to tailor the gearing for different conditions. Chains are also mechanically simple and easy to inspect.
Disadvantages – The downside is maintenance. Chains require regular cleaning, lubrication and adjustment. Dirt acts like grinding paste, gradually wearing the pins, bushes and rollers. Neglect shortens both chain and sprocket life considerably. Contrary to popular belief, chains do not actually stretch. Instead, wear occurs between the pins and bushes inside each link, increasing the distance between adjacent rollers. Over hundreds of links, this accumulated wear makes the chain longer.
Belt Drive
A belt drive replaces the chain with a reinforced rubber belt containing high-strength fibres, usually made from materials such as Kevlar or carbon fibre. Belts are widely used on cruisers, touring motorcycles and some commuter machines.
Advantages – Perhaps the greatest benefit is cleanliness. Belts require no oil or grease and operate almost silently. They also tend to last considerably longer than chains under normal road use. Maintenance is minimal, with little more than periodic inspection and tension checks. Belts also absorb vibration extremely well, contributing to a smoother ride.
Disadvantages – Belts can be damaged by stones becoming trapped between the belt and pulley, making them less suitable for serious off-road use. They are also more difficult to repair if damaged and generally require replacement rather than repair. Changing the final drive ratio is far less straightforward than with a chain.
Shaft Drive
A shaft drive transmits power through a rotating steel shaft enclosed within the swingarm. At the rear wheel, bevel gears turn the drive through ninety degrees to rotate the wheel. BMW, Moto Guzzi and several large touring motorcycles have long been associated with shaft drive.
Advantages – Shaft drive is exceptionally clean and requires very little routine maintenance. There is no chain to lubricate or adjust, making it particularly attractive for riders covering high mileages or touring in all weathers. Because the entire mechanism is enclosed, dirt, rain and road salt have far less effect than they do on exposed chains. Many shaft drive systems will comfortably cover well over 100,000 miles with little more than occasional oil changes.
Disadvantages – Nothing is entirely maintenance-free. Universal joints, bearings, seals and bevel gears all require engineering precision and, although highly reliable, repairs can be expensive if problems develop. Shaft systems are also heavier than chains and belts. Some power is lost through the additional gears, although modern designs have reduced these losses significantly. Earlier shaft-driven motorcycles could also exhibit shaft jacking, where the rear suspension rose or fell noticeably under acceleration. Modern suspension designs have largely eliminated this characteristic.
Which System Is Most Efficient?
In purely mechanical terms:
- Chain: highest efficiency (typically 97–99%)
- Belt: very close behind
- Shaft: slightly lower due to the additional bevel gears
For most riders, however, these differences are insignificant. Reliability, maintenance requirements and suitability for the intended use are far more important than losing a small percentage of power through the transmission.
Which Lasts Longest?
Under ideal conditions:
- Chain: typically 15,000–30,000 miles, depending on maintenance.
- Belt: often 40,000–80,000 miles or more.
- Shaft: commonly exceeds 100,000 miles with routine servicing.
These figures vary enormously according to riding style, maintenance and environmental conditions.
Which Is Best for Different Types of Riding?
- Sports motorcycles almost always use chains because they are light, efficient and allow gearing changes.
- Adventure motorcycles are usually chain-driven because they cope well with mud, stones and rough terrain, and damaged components can often be repaired or replaced almost anywhere in the world.
- Cruisers frequently use belts because they are quiet, smooth and require little maintenance.
- Large touring motorcycles often use shaft drive because riders value reliability and freedom from routine maintenance during long-distance travel.

Common Myths
- Shaft drive is maintenance-free. No. While it requires much less routine attention than a chain, the drive still contains bearings, oil, seals and gears that require periodic inspection and servicing.
- Belts are weak. Modern reinforced belts are remarkably strong and capable of transmitting substantial power. They are, however, more vulnerable to impact damage than chains.
- Chains always wear out quickly. Not if maintained properly. A high-quality chain that is correctly lubricated, adjusted and kept clean can last many tens of thousands of miles.
So Which Is Best?
There is no universal winner because every design involves engineering compromises.
- If outright efficiency, low weight and flexibility are the priorities, a chain drive remains the best choice.
- If you want quiet, clean operation with minimal maintenance, a belt drive offers an excellent solution.
- If effortless long-distance touring and low routine maintenance matter most, shaft drive is difficult to beat.
Ultimately, manufacturers choose the final drive that best suits the motorcycle’s intended purpose. Rather than asking which system is best, it is more useful to ask which system is best for the way you ride.
